Extreme Heat Advisory: City of Batavia Opens Temporary Cooling Center

The City of Batavia has activated a Temporary Cooling Center at City Hall in response to an Extreme Heat Advisory from the National Weather Service. The center is open 24 hours a day starting June 30, 2026, to July 4, 2026, to help protect our most vulnerable residents.

Weather Conditions Driving the Alert

Batavia and the greater Chicagoland area are currently experiencing a severe and dangerous heat wave. Key weather factors over the next few days include:

  • Extreme Heat Advisory: The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Advisory extending through Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 7:00 A.M..
  • High Temperatures: Daytime highs are expected to soar into the mid-to-upper 90s throughout the week.
  • Dangerous Heat Index: When combined with high humidity, the heat index is projected to reach values as high as 106 degrees.
  • Cumulative Heat Stress: Warm overnight lows remaining in the mid-70s will offer little to no natural relief, making prolonged exposure increasingly hazardous.
